Tomtom Go 520 Traffic: Appearance

part of our review of the Tomtom Go 520 Traffic on Monday 19th May 2008

The TomTom Go 520 features a nice widescreen screen weighing in at 4.3 inches. This allows the system to display icons in two rows of three. The menu system itself is easy to learn though I have on more than one occasion gone into the wrong sub-menu in an attempt to find something. Perhaps with time this habit will cease.

Mapping on the widescreen is easy to follow, with plenty of room left over for essential information such as speed, road names, etc.

The build quality of the TomTom Go 520 Traffic is excellent with a soft yet firm rubbery feel to the casing. The only downside is it is very easy to scratch the casing. The cradle detached itself several times landing with a bump on the dashboard. This has caused faint hairline scratches.

As part of appearances, button size is an important consideration. Luckily, the TomTom Go 520 only has one button - the on/off button. It is quite small in the grand scheme of things and does need to be depressed for several seconds before the systems starts to power up. We would prefer the system to power up instantly on pressing the button quickly. The system shuts down when the button is quickly pressed so why doesn't it start up like this?

Overall, when talking about appearance, we have to hand it to TomTom. The Go 520 is beautifully crafted. The dash of silver at the top of the screen is a welcome sight on this black and grey device. If the TomTom 520 were in a beauty contest, it would rank very highly indeed.
