Tomtom Go 930 Traffic: Enhanced Positioning Technology
part of our review of the Tomtom Go 930 Traffic on Friday 24th October 2008
TomTom sent some information along with this system about a feature not available on the 530 or 730.
Enhanced Positioning Technology (EPT) is a tool that helps to offer better navigation in poor signal areas.
It monitors your driving style and when it loses a satellite signal, it predicts your position based upon your driving style. This means that you'll be directed regardless of whether you have a signal or not. This is handy for junctions that occur just after tunnels, for instance.
Where it has no driving data and no signal (for example if you have only just turned the system on), EPT will not function.
So is this a good thing? we think it is. It sounds a little gimmicky though it's practical uses in built-up cities is obvious. If you're surrounded by tall buildings in the middle of Birmingham or London, the last thing you want is to lose the signal. A loss of signal would stop the display of fresh instructions as the system is unable to identify where you are. EPT would take over in this instance and would predict where you are whilst in the background, the system would be working hard on getting a new signal.
Ultimately, if you spend a lot of time in built up cities with more junctions than you care to count, the TomTom Go 930 is right up your street with this handy EPT functionality. If you use your system outside of the major cities, it has less of an appeal though it's handy nevertheless. in this case, it would come down to personal choice.
