Navman S30 3d: Explanation of the Screen
part of our review of the Navman S30 3d on Tuesday 11th November 2008
The Navman S30 3D shares the same screen layout as it's predecessor . The screen below shows a typical display mid-route:

- The current instruction panel tells you what road you are heading towards. The picture below tells you what the next junction is and how you should proceed at it. This is combined with a voice command. The voice commands were nice and early giving us plenty of warning though the speaker quality did appear a little poor.
- The route stats menu hides all the important information in our opinion. Given there is only 3.5 inches to play with here, something inevitably has to give way and unfortunately it is the route statistics (current speed, estimated journey length, estimated time of arrival). This makes the S30 more of a personal mapping device rather than one for business people who spend a lot of time on the road.
- The cancel route feature is an excellent time saving feature and we also noticed that once you reach your destination, the system clears the route ready for the next journey. A novel feature.
- Zoom is a mixed bag to be honest. We thought it would be a handy tool but alas we were wrong. We were suprised to see a zoomed out map when we were on the road test. We tried to zoom in but this zoomed in on a random road unconnected with our journey. Perhaps a little more time to master the controls or a read through the virtual manual (downloadable from Navman) would have ironed out this problem.
- Back to Map is also a mixed bag. On the one hand it allows an easy way to get back to the map. On the other hand, some of the sub-menus employ this icon where the next icon has been used. So for instance, when you click on Preferences, it's a two page menu. It has a next button on page 1 but on page 2, there is no such thing. Instead lies a 'Back To Map' button. In our haste we kept pressing this as we speeded up our use of it. It's a handy feature though it's not really essential in our opinion.
- Current road tells you where you are now. Handy if you need to phone someone or if you break down.
- Main menu is where you can find all the settings. Everything is contained here from routing to preferences.
