Tried And Tested In Wales!
Wales (Cymru) has a lot to offer - historic monuments, areas of natural beauty, bustling metropolitan areas, and an abundance of different road types! Despite having just one Motorway (M4), it has loads of dual carriageways single carriageways, A-roads, B-roads and unclassified roads in the form of single lane roads and tracks.
Whilst sat nav systems tend to cope well on large open roads, a track is a significantly different proposition, and something Wales can offer that will test systems to the max.
Furthermore, Welsh place names are often a good test of the text-to-speech facility that some systems offer. There's nothing quite like a text-to-speech system trying to pronounce "Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch"!
In addition to the road types, the road speeds differ tremendously. Whilst some lanes are classified as 'national speed limit' roads, you would be very lucky to see more than 30 mph on some of these tracks!
The benefit of varying speeds is this will help to test the accuracy of the mapping algorithms used by sat nav systems. When it determines the distance and estimated time of arrival, most satellite navigation systems guess this based upon complex mathematical equations. Testing a system on various road types at safe and realistic speeds will test the accuracy of the planning algorithms used by each system.
In a nutshell, the single greatest benefit of a test in Wales is that accuracy can be tested to the max. After all, the whole point of a satellite navigation system is that it should be able to quickly and accurately navigate you to your intended destination.
